A Book That Lit Your Way Out Of A Reading Slump
There are more than a few books recently that have managed to really pull me in, but Sawkill Girls was the most recent and it was so good that I finished it in just two days! I’m normally a pretty quick reader but it’s not every book that can suck me in like that.
The mystery in this book had me throwing out crazy theories left and right. I was raving about it to anyone that would listen. I just had so much fun with this book! I love the spooky vibe as well as the overall story and the characters.
Even though I love Marion’s character, there’s something about Val that tugs at me because I ended up really liking her. She wasn’t perfect and she definitely made some bad choices, but the fact was that she was genuinely a good person with a good conscience who was pushed into circumstances beyond her control. I liked it when she finally stood up for herself and started doing something about her situation.
I also loved that this book was so diverse. It had a black character that was also asexual, a bisexual, and a lesbian character. Sometimes books tend to have characters going through the whole process of who they are when it comes to their sexuality, or it’s made to be a big deal–but in Sawkill Girls it’s just kinda allowed to be (there was some of that struggle with one of the characters, but it was done very well and I understood why it was necessary). I liked that we could have these diverse characters without overemphasizing the diversity (if that makes sense?).
The story was really interesting, and it was just super fun to see the girls grow into their own. I recommend it if you’re looking for a YA mystery or something with spooky vibes this month!
