Down The TBR Hole: #1

I saw this on a couple of other blogs and I knew I had to start it sometime because this is exactly what I need, haha. This is a book meme hosted by Lia @LostInAStory where you basically just go through your TBR list and decide which books go, and which books stay. My TBR is seriously huge so I think I’m going to start off with 10 this time around. Here are the exact instructions:

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

1. The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum
Goodreads Description:

Who is Jason Bourne? Is he an assassin, a terrorist, a thief? Why has he got four million dollars in a Swiss bank account? Why has someone tried to murder him?…

Jason Bourne does not know the answer to any of these questions. Suffering from amnesia, he does not even know that he is Jason Bourne. What manner of man is he? What are his secrets? Who has he killed?

Verdict:

Delete

It’s a pretty long series and I’m just not that invested in it. I more or less just put it on there because I’d seen the movie and I knew I could find the books for cheap at a used bookstore.

2. In the Forests of the Night by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes
Goodreads Description:

By day, Risika sleeps in shaded room in Concord, Massachusetts. By night, she hunts the streets of New York City. She is used to being alone.
But someone is following Risika. He has left her a black rose, the same sort of rose that sealed her fate three hundred years ago. Three hundred years ago Risika had a family- a brother and a father who loved her. Three hundred years ago she was human.
Now she is a vampire, a powerful one. But her past has come back to torment her.

Verdict:

Delete

I was really indecisive about this one, but I think I’m gonna have to let it go simply because I don’t want to read it as much as other books (which I have like a million of).

3. Working Siff by Rachel Caine
Goodreads Description:

Bryn Davis knows working at Fairview Mortuary isn’t the most glamorous career choice, but at least it offers stable employment–until she discovers her bosses using a drug that resurrects the clientele as part of an extortion racket. Now, Bryn faces being terminated–literally, and with extreme prejudice.

With the help of corporate double-agent Patrick McCallister, Bryn has a chance to take down the bigger problem–pharmaceutical company Pharmadene, which treats death as the ultimate corporate loyalty program. She’d better do it fast, before she becomes a zombie slave–a real working stiff. She’d be better off dead…

Verdict:

Keep

DEFINITELY A KEEPER! This is Rachel Caine and I have yet to read a series/book from her that I didn’t like ❤

4. Paranormalcy by Kiersten White
Goodreads Description:

Evie’s always thought of herself as a normal teenager, even though she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours.

But Evie’s about to realize that she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.

Verdict:

Keep

Again, this is an author that I love. I haven’t come across a book of hers yet that I didn’t like so it’s staying!

5. Nightshade by Andrea Creme
Goodreads Description:

6. A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
Goodreads Description:

Deep in the stacks of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell.

Verdict:

Keep

This one sounds pretty interesting, so I think I’m gonna keep it!

7. Graceling by Kristin Cashore
Goodreads Description:

She never expects to become Po’s friend.

She never expects to learn a new truth about her own Grace – or about a terrible secret that lies hidden far away.

Verdict:

Keep

This one HAS to stay. I had a friend recommend it highly to me, and I’ve read so many reviews that say it’s great. Plus there’s the fact that I’ve bought the entire series, haha.

8. Unearthly by Cynthia Hand
Goodreads Description:

In the beginning, there’s a boy standing in the trees…
Clara Gardner has recently learned that she’s part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn’t easy.

Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place and out of place at the same time. Because there’s another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara’s less angelic side.

As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she’d have to make between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?

Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

Verdict:

Keep

This one sounds interesting too, plus I love books/characters that are angels so I wanna keep this one.

9. The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks
Goodreads Description:

For Durzo Blint, assassination is an art-and he is the city’s most accomplished artist.

For Azoth, survival is precarious. Something you never take for granted. As a guild rat, he’s grown up in the slums, and learned to judge people quickly – and to take risks. Risks like apprenticing himself to Durzo Blint.

But to be accepted, Azoth must turn his back on his old life and embrace a new identity and name. As Kylar Stern, he must learn to navigate the assassins’ world of dangerous politics and strange magics – and cultivate a flair for death.

Verdict:

Keep

Yessss, give me more assassins! I’ve heard really good things about this one ❤

10. The Dark Divine (The Dark Divine #1)
by Bree Despain
Goodreads Description:

Grace Divine, daughter of the local pastor, always knew something terrible happened the night Daniel Kalbi disappeared–the night she found her brother Jude collapsed on the porch, covered in his own blood–but she has no idea what a truly monstrous secret that night held.

The memories her family has tried to bury resurface when Daniel returns, three years later, and enrolls in Grace and Jude’s high school. Despite promising Jude she’ll stay away, Grace cannot deny her attraction to Daniel’s shocking artistic abilities, his way of getting her to look at the world from new angles, and the strange, hungry glint in his eyes.

The closer Grace gets to Daniel, the more she jeopardizes her life, as her actions stir resentment in Jude and drive him to embrace the ancient evil Daniel unleashed that horrific night. Grace must discover the truth behind the boy’s dark secret…and the cure that can save the ones she loves. But she may have to lay down the ultimate sacrifice to do it–her soul.

Verdict:

Keep

Ooooh, the description for this one sounds good! It’s got good ratings as well so it’s not going anywhere!
